About Me – Bridget Kitley Herb Works
I was born in Shillingstone, Dorset, into a farming family. Growing up surrounded by animals and a practical mother who loved her vegetable garden and herbs, I developed an early love for nature.
In 1974, I moved to South Africa, where I met my future husband. After returning to the UK and marrying in Childe Okeford, we moved back to South Africa in 1983. In 1986, I bought Heiveld Herbs, a small herb nursery. This was when my passion for herbs blossomed, and I began to collect and propagate all kinds of herbs. In 2011, I rebranded the business to Bridget Kitley’s Herb Works, marking the beginning of a new chapter in my herbal journey.
In South Africa, I taught workshops on medicinal and culinary herbs, natural insect repellents, and sustainable gardening practices. I also shared my knowledge on radio programs with Cape Talk, SAFM, CCFM, and Helderberg Radio, and gave talks to a wide range of groups, from garden clubs to universities.
My mentor, Yvette van Wijk, played a crucial role in shaping my herbal knowledge. Her book on herbs and her endless enthusiastic help, inspired and guided me into my career. I built my herb business into a successful enterprise in the Western Cape, offering workshops, plant design, landscaping, and a variety of retail and wholesale services. Over 37 years, my passion for herbs and plants has never waned, and I love every moment of growing and educating others. It is my calling.
Since returning to the UK, I’ve continued my journey, applying my knowledge of herbs and sustainable gardening to the unique challenges of British gardening and of course, let's not forget the weather!
I’m presently based just outside Sherborne, with close business links to South Africa. I continue making my natural skincare range at Bridget Kitley Herb Works, which is free from additives and with a foray of healing essential oils, focuses on healing the skin.
I offer herb workshops & talks here in the UK, just as I did in South Africa, where I teach about the benefits of herbs, how to make natural remedies, plus how to design herb gardens that are both beautiful and functional.
I also offer talks and consultations to garden clubs, universities, and private groups, sharing my expertise on herbal remedies, sustainable gardening, and plant care. Whether you’re looking for an engaging speaker or a hands-on workshop, I would love to bring my passion for plants to your group or community -
